I was riding some roads like this yesterday, but I think I hit one too many potholes… broke another spoke (lucky thing I was on my way home by then!) and took a good hour last night to re-true my rear rim. But whatever—a little bit of adventure is worth such consequences.
Ooooooooooooooo……… maybe THAT’S why I keep breaking spokes… but fire roads are so good…

This has never happened to me. I gave out something like 13 tubes last year, in sizes from 700x23 to 700x32, but never has anyone ever given me a tube.

Yeah, but how do you write that shit down, so you don’t forget it by the end of the ride?

Shit cyclists say

It’s nice to see a bike blog that covers some Seattle riding. Unlike me, he takes awesome photos.
Although it’s not quite Baby’s birthday (Oct 12), I broke 10,000 miles today (10,052) on this bike. The first year, it was just Baby and me getting my bike legs. And then I bought Precious, so the next 2 years of her life, ride duty was split between her and the boy (who’s at 8,581 miles for just under 2 years of riding.)
Baby’s been a solid performer. Sure, a few squeaks and squawks since I started racing this year (seriously, the stock wheels just gave up), but as much as I get all self-conscious about her when I line up, this was a great first real road bike for me.
No body puts Baby in the corner. Nobody!
Inspiration.
Today I watched the odometer on Fluffy roll over to 18,700 mi. I was somewhere on Mercer Island, clicking through to find out what the time was when I noticed it tick over.
I know that numbers don’t tell the whole story. Fluffy is actually Surly Steamroller Mk II, after v1.0 died a mysterious frame crack related death. Precious crossed the country. Baby did get put in the corner a few times, but not before seeing 100 miles of nowhere.
Bernie often calls me a mileage whore. In part he’s right. I don’t have a lot of structure to my riding. But at the same time I’ve come to see and experience so much more than can be expressed in a number.
10,052. 8,581. They’re just numbers, but between zero miles and now on those bikes, this young lady has become one of the most inspirational people I know. In part because of the things I have seen in my miles, but mostly because of the things I have not that she has.
