What does a year’s worth of cycling look like?
I detailed a project that I canned a while back, where multiple routes are overlapped on top of one another, showing where I’ve ridden. It was mostly because it was too time consuming for me to do it that I stopped it, but someone else had a similar idea and released a public tool to do this.
Everything I’d expected would happen with this tool holds true; routes that are frequently traveled appear as dark red lines, and routes less frequently traveled are more translucent.
If city planners were to take this data, they’d learn very quickly where arterial routes for cyclists are, and place & maintain infrastructure in the appropriate areas. The data’s there… all they have to do is put it all together.
Another interesting thing I just noticed is that on one of the maps, you can see the privacy settings kicking in on Strava; there’s a gaping hole around the Sculpture park, which is close to where I live, because I set a privacy boundary there.
