US racer Neil Bezdek in Bicycling Magazine

My power meter has recorded 363,000 kilojoules of work, a close approximation of calories burned. (This does not include warming up for races, commuting around town, or the occasional recovery spin when I simply delete the file.) My season’s workload is equivalent to running 139 marathons, and could be fueled by eating 1,450 donuts. This seemingly astronomical number of calories is less than the energy in only 12 gallons of gasoline, which would propel most cars about 300 miles. My bicycle, on the other hand, has covered more than 10,000.

Give up the car.

Also, they need to make car engines more efficient.
